Rose Colored Glasses WIP 3

There's always an "ugly stage" in paintings and I find when I hit this stage I am at a crossroads. I can push through it and try to force it to work, and take the risk of ruining a painting; or I can back off and take a breather and look at it from a distance. So I'm taking a break from this one and starting another painting. I know that this painting will need more balance in the values. Darks will have to lay in under the glasswork to ground them on the table. More layers of grey will be added and darker values on the rose bottle in the middle. I will add details on the purfume bottle and glass goblet as well. And maybe wash a brown-grey across the entire table.

Wincie's Garden: Iris Study

Thought I'd jump in here and post the finished painting I did as a demo for a class I was teaching. This is done with a very limted palette - pthalo blue, permanent rose, new gamgoge, quin coral for the iris petals and beard. Same blue & yellow for the stem with a toss of FUB and burnt sienna. Background was done by mixing a black out of pthalo green and permanent alizarin, then leaning it toward green by adding my green mixture and a bit of FUB. Basically, it was the dreggs of the palette with fresh mixtures of my working paint thrown in.

Rose Colored Glasses WIP 2

Using varying shades of gray, shapes were laid into the glass pitcher and begun in the background window. The dark greens were built up in the horizontal glass and shades of rose and coral were glazed on top of lavender refractions in the center glass piece. Arbitrary tree shapes will be put in the window and the rose will be punched up with strong pigment toward the end, with green & rose reflections bouncing around the painting. The antique perfume bottle to the right is clear cut glass and will be handled with similar grays as the rest of the painting.

Rose Colored Glasses - WIP #1

Here's a new one on the board. I love the way glass refracts, reflects, and distorts. This painting will be primarily done with a large percentage of it being in greys and greyed down color. The pop of color will be in the pinks and a bit of green reflection from the deep green glass laying on its side.

So far I've decided to work on the reflections of color because I know it could make or break the painting. I spent a lot of time doing a detailed drawing, but I knew if I spend all my time on the glasswork without thought to the large expanse of table top, I could paint myself into a corner, so to speak. So I've decided to work on the reflections early on to get some of it established before doing the "fun" part. Delayed gratification!

Amber Globes (final)

I thought I'd post the "last push"
