W.I.P. - 26"x20" Brown Pelican

Today I began working on my brown pelican. I'm using Daniel Smith's Shadow Violet, a wonderful combination of a blue and a red that both granulate and separate into lovely shades. This may look tedious, but it is simply painting shadow shapes negatively between the feathers. The feathers will soon emerge as the shapes are built up. It is important to make the shapes with contouring in mind, to give the feathers a directional movement .

The majoriy of this fellow will be in shades of grey-lavender and sienna browns. I will monitor the brightness of the hues in the background as I paint the bird. I will made decisions on adjusting the background as the bird takes form.
