Shell Ginger - (work in progress)

For the last painting of my Tropical Floral series, I'm working on a ginger blossom. My brother-in-law in New Orleans has these beauties in his yard and they were particularly stunning after a hot, steamy thunderstorm. This painting is much smaller than my two previous... only 9"x13", but I had an old painting that I wanted to switch out of a frame and thought this composition would work quite well for it. Greens are made with phthalo blue and new gamboge. New gamboge is the primary yellow, with quin pink, permanent alizarin, and quin coral for the reds. A touch of cobalt makes the blue-lavender shifts in the shadows. This painting calls for many glazes of very transparent washes as I carefully work around the raindrops and moisture on the leaves.
